Dad Petitions to Change School’s Mascot Because It Sounds Like the Word ‘Penis’

All of us are invested in protecting our kids, especially when they're at school. Unfortunately, in trying to protect kids, some parents take things a little overboard. A Utah dad is demanding a local high school change its "inappropriate" mascot -- not because of the mascot itself, but because the name sounds ever-so-slightly similar to the word "penis."

Farmington High School in Utah isn't scheduled to open until the fall of 2018. Still, the administration is already taking steps to get future students and parents excited about the new school. The students have already been allowed to pick their new mascot: the Phoenix. The name sounds innocent, but one concerned father has already found fault with it. Kyle Fraughton created an online petition urging the school to change the mascot due to the fact that the pluralized version of the word -- Phoenixes or Phoenices -- sounds too much like "penis".

More from CafeMom:

In his Change.org explanation, Fraughton claims he discovered the penis problem while "practicing" cheers that his children would one day chant while attending the school. "We cheered, 'Go Phoenixes!' However, it didn't sound right to us, so we looked online to makes sure that we were saying the pluralized word of Phoenix correctly," he wrote. "We quickly discovered that although Phoenixes is an acceptable way to say it, another pluralization is Phoenices. So we changed our cheer to, 'Go Phoenices!' Which is when the concern began to set in."

Having already anticipated confusion, Richard Swanson, Farmington High School's principal, released a statement alongside the original mascot announcement that said the word would only be used in the singular. "We are one," The Salt Lake Tribune reported the statement saying. "We are The Phoenix."

Still, Fraughton claims he doesn't find this idea realistic. "I think that’s a great idea in concept, but see reality playing out far differently," he explains. "Nearly all school mascots are referred to in the plural form (Darts, Vikings, Braves, Wildcats, etc.), so when you think about cheering 'Go Phoenix!' it sounds a bit strange because it is grammatically incorrect."

The father says his main concern is that students from other schools will use the similarities between 'Phoenices' and 'penis' to mock Farmington High students. "There are many people who find this type of thing funny, and all it will take is one person to figure it out before it goes viral," he wrote.

Unsurprisingly, many people found his petition completely ridiculous and used it as an opportunity to troll the concerned father:

Many other parents in the area, however, seemed to be just as disturbed by the mascot mishap as Fraughton was:

More from CafeMom:

Rather than offering his own alternative mascot, Fraughton is asking that the administration give future Farmington students the chance to vote again with Phoenix completely off the table.

"We plead with you to consider a mascot change toward something more in line with our wonderful community, and away from this well intentioned, but potentially dangerous choice," he said.

Fraughton's petition has 3,008 out of the 5,000 signatures it is asking for. But the school district has not shown any indication that they're considering changing the name of the mascot as of now.
