DotA 2: Mineski On Their Way To PGL Open Bucharest 2017

  • Wed, 13 Sep 2017 14:44

It is hard to recall a season beginning with more hype. Looking at the rosters, upcoming tournaments and money on the line, SEA DotA 2 is where it's at. We already looked at the new Minor and Major system and while nothing is perfect we give it a massive two thumbs up. Twenty-two Minors and Majors coming up, all with a Southeast Asian qualifier. How the hell will we have time to breath?

Our first look kicked off with the PGL Open Bucharest 2017 SEA Qualifier.

International talent was in no short supply with this line up.

Mineski only dropped one game in the entire qualifier, to Fnatic in the group stages, before taking out WG.Unity and Execration in the playoffs to secure their place at the LAN final.

What stood out was the shortened format of the qualifier. PGL explained while speaking to joinDOTA that this was because of the team's busy schedules as they tried to play in every qualifier currently running. Because of this, Time Rating was implemented to help break and ties. Teams were made aware of this before the qualifier began.

This resulted in Fnatic being, quite frankly, screwed over. It isn't the first time this has happened in DotA 2 (see Galaxy Battles' Facebook page rating) but hopefully will be the last. Especially when you consider how much a losing team could influence the result by either A. GGing out of a match or B. Fighting till the end and adding on an extra 10 minutes of high ground defense.

PGL have now abolished the rule.

Our eyes now turn to the SL i-League Invitational Season 3 SEA Qualifier to see which SEA team will be the next to claim a place at a LAN. On paper Fnatic should be major player in these qualifiers but as with all new teams it takes a while to put it together. Can they make it through to a LAN?
